Is AstraSpace really free?
Yes. AstraSpace is 100% free and open source under the MIT license. You can self-host it on your own servers with no usage limits, no feature gates, and no hidden costs.
How does it compare to Notion?

What can the AI chat do?
AstraSpace AI chat uses embedded RAG to search your documents and provide context-aware answers with source citations. It can also control your workspace — create pages, manage tasks, update properties, and more — all through natural language. Supports OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google Gemini, and Mistral. Bring your own API key.
Can I use it for my team?
Absolutely. AstraSpace supports team workspaces with role-based access control (Owner, Admin, Member, Guest), real-time collaboration with live presence, page-level permissions, audit logging, web push notifications, public page sharing, and an admin panel for managing users and organizations.
How is my data encrypted?
AstraSpace encrypts everything at the database level using AES-256-GCM — page titles, block content, file attachments, and version history are all encrypted at rest. In offline mode, client-side encryption adds another layer with a passphrase only you know. Your encryption key never leaves your server.
Where are my files stored?
You choose: your own S3 bucket (AWS, MinIO, etc.), Google Drive, or local filesystem. All files are encrypted before storage. AstraSpace never stores your files on our servers — you have full control over where your data lives.
What is MCP and how does it work?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI models interact with external tools. AstraSpace includes a built-in MCP server so AI assistants like Claude can directly create pages, manage tasks, query your workspace, and more — all with your permission.
What are the self-hosting requirements?
You need Node.js 24+, PostgreSQL, and Redis. The entire stack runs with a single docker compose up command. We provide detailed deployment guides for popular platforms.
Is there a hosted/cloud version?
A managed cloud version is planned. Join the waitlist to be notified when it launches. In the meantime, self-hosting takes less than 5 minutes with our Docker setup.
